Tense Past

we celebrate choices
multiple voices
shouting from corners
separators or joiners

it matters little
this divergent riddle
no one has meaning
just posing and preening

the times cry for heart
but we can’t seem to chart
where we need to be going
little room for knowing
leaves none for growing

we’re all pulling apart
damn! call it out with the art!
for the whole not just part
not an end just a start

a suggestion for taking?
not out for rule making
but look less towards the me now
and more towards the see how

we need simple distractions
from surface attractions
dig deep in the creep
make that quantum leap

it’s obvious I know
but you making it go?

seems it’s right in our face
but doesn’t fill up the space
between our left and right ear
or political career

I wonder what could be
that would make us see
are we so like the child
so easily beguiled
at just our own space
disregarding the race?

are we still on the run
or is it already done?
this the song of the swan?
don’t gimmie that pawn!

no pretense for answer
to this creeping cancer
high wire dancer
no use necromancer

take a look inside
make a heart double wide
for a karma collide
that can’t be denied

the limits the sky
if it’s do or it’s die
or do we lay as we lie
not wonderin why
except gimmie dat pie?

don’t wanna bore
I’ve said it before
but we’re out like a whore
need to cure this affliction
of this me addiction

but how does it come
if we’re never the one?
it’s gotta be you
if you want it to be me
tied together is free
not separate see?

if only we knew
how this gonna do
don’t know do you?

but if we ain’t gonna ask
peel away this death mask
no introspection commenced
no hope gonna last
if we remain so past tensed
then we’ll be the tense past

About Scott Schoffstall

I'm a relatively new poet having started in earnest 11/2010. I have sought the authentic and am still on that quest. I've diverged from the norm yet always reached for the universal. My interests were always beyond the here and now. Beyond the taste, touch, smell, hear, see. Where the mind and the spirit transcend the physical. They say perception is reality. Is it? Are we truly all there is?
