life’s too short

life’s too short
so why live at all?
let’s lie where we fall
slide under the pall
lose sight of who’s right
and who’s wrong
as we slither along
s’all good
it all floats above
on the wings of a dove
just like it should

you just reach for nothing
and give what it brings
remain unaware
for a life without care
come what may
you and yours
will assume all its ways
and only have to expend
all you are to its ends

life’s too short
so go with the flow
we’ll make it up as we go
we drift to and fro
let the current predispose
as we just float along
singing our song
the sun’ll come out tomorrow
somewhere over the rainbow

except this rainbow’s end
has an ensnaring black hole
consuming children with lies
absurdly contrived
utilitarian, propagandized,
peer pressured to mold
homogenized and sold

their pull in collusion
masquerading inclusion
as they indoctrinate hate
and berate others for their trait
inventing names to lame
provoking a delusory game
not to coexist but to dictate

wait!

that’s not a crime
not if they’re of our mind
we do it all the time
and sell it on prime time
you too will toe the line
we’ve already shut your mouth
and sent your one amendment south

so you need to chill
see our (sunny day) dealer
prescriber of pseudo scientific swill
hocus pocus healer
stealer of identity
merchandising serenity
you’re no different from the rest
got a bad hair day?
you must be depressed

so we’re off to see the whiz
cuz they’re the gods of it is what it is
because because because because because
because of the abetting for us it does

within this emerald temple we’ve erected
everything of our’s is accepted
except, of course, what we’ve contracepted
so side up for your side effected
happy pills
there’s no reason for reason’s nil
there’s our pockets for you to fulfill
so take two
and call me in the morning
never mind that label warning
and to our reign you’ll be bowed
just follow your yellow back road
just to be certain
keep your mutt from that curtain

so your neighbor died of lung cancer
a loyal marlboro man’s answer
his son, sentenced to a cell
for selling soma to identities
disillusioned
in this make believe hell
under the black hole rainbow spell
oh well
guess he didn’t have the degree
wasn’t the pedigree
to deal in our chemistry

and what about that sun?
it’s obscured in blanketing layers
disrupting oceanic conveyors
or haven’t you heard?
oh don’t be absurd
we roll with the herd

life’s too short
so let’s stash it away
under carpets of denial
while we go forth and play
hide those troubles away
save them for another’s rainy day
don’t be a bore
who cares what the hell we’re here for?

Poetic Sojourn

About Scott Schoffstall

I'm a relatively new poet having started in earnest 11/2010. I have sought the authentic and am still on that quest. I've diverged from the norm yet always reached for the universal. My interests were always beyond the here and now. Beyond the taste, touch, smell, hear, see. Where the mind and the spirit transcend the physical. They say perception is reality. Is it? Are we truly all there is?

Thoughts to ponder upon this piece….
Our journey in life is varied and many lessons need to be learned,
Some capture treasures unforseen while others leave heartache and tears.
So many beginnings and endings, each one touches our heart and soul
leaving our spirit to soar. In all of life’s trials and tribulations there are many
wonderful things to enjoy, the choice is ours!

  2. You are so cool! I don’t believe I’ve read through a single thing like this before.
So nice to discover someone with a few original thoughts on this
topic. Really.. thank you for starting this up. This site is something that is required on the
internet, someone with a bit of originality! http://christfaithfulmessengers.com/2015/03/19th-march-let-your-words-be-full-of-grace/
